What South Dakota does to outdoor wood

Deck boards lie flat, so snow sits on them all winter and the sun bakes them all summer. Fences stand in open wind and full sun. Unprotected wood turns gray, the grain opens up, and water gets in. Properly prepped and stained wood sheds that water instead.

Decks

The surface is cleaned and allowed to dry, loose or failing finish is dealt with, and the stain goes on when the weather gives it time to soak in and cure. Railings, spindles and stairs take the most time and get the same attention as the floor.

Fences, new and weathered

A lot of new homes in Sioux Falls, Harrisburg, Tea and Brandon get a cedar or treated pine privacy fence in the first year or two. Left bare, that fence goes gray quickly. Staining it while the wood is still in good shape is the cheapest protection it will ever get.

An older fence that has already grayed can often be cleaned and stained back to an even color. We will look at the condition of the boards and posts and tell you honestly what stain can and cannot fix.

Stain or paint?

Stain soaks in and wears away gradually, so it is easier to maintain. Paint gives a solid color but has to be kept up once it starts to peel. We will talk through which one fits your project and how you want it to look.
